To be chosen as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year is to be afforded entry to cricket's oldest and most prestigious Hall of Fame. Each year since 1889 - with a few notable exceptions - five players have been recognised for their contributions to the previous English cricket season.  As of early 2013, which saw the publication of the 150th edition of the famous Almanack, the number of players honoured by Wisden totalled 570: 569 men and one woman.
